Giant Sea Bass public art sculpture

In 2006, the City of Dana Point opened up a commission for public art in front of a new firestation  in Capistrano Beach, California.  This project was open to all local artists and was promoted by the Dana Point Coastal Arts Organization . Numerous qualified applicants submitted design concepts. My submission of 'The Return of the Black Seabass' was chosen for the commission. As this project neared final completion after more research, I changed the actual name of the sculpture to "Recovery - Giant Sea Bass (Stereolepis gigas) 2007". The sculpture was dedicated on October 9th, 2008 at Firestation 29 on Victoria Blvd., Capistrano Beach.

The actual process of fabricating this large rockfish sculpture was a bit different from working with the small ones in my studio. Dealing with the engineering of such massive components. For those interested in the fabrication process, I will cover this in separate pages. Of course the process has been most interesting to me. It was a challenge to figure out how to engineer it each step of the way. The City of Dana Point was pleased with the outcome. This is a massive object which will have long-term viability with local relevance. It is prominantly visible in old town Capistrano Beach.
